==Life==
He was the youngest of the six children of Gulian Verplanck (1698–1751) and Mary Crommelin Verplanck. He attended and graduated from [[Columbia University|King's College]] in 1768.  He was an uncle of [[Daniel C. Verplanck]] and great-uncle of [[Gulian Crommelin Verplanck]], both members of the [[U.S. House of Representatives]].

==Career==
After graduating from King's College in 1768, he went to Holland to acquire practical experience in mercantile and banking procedures by working at his uncle's firm, Daniel Crommelin and Sons.

He was a [[United States Federalist Party|Federalist]] member from [[New York County]] of the [[New York State Assembly]], and was [[Speaker of the New York State Assembly|Speaker]] in 1789-90 and 1796-97. He became President of the [[Bank of New York]] and in 1792 helped found the [[Tontine]] Association, a precursor of the [[New York Stock Exchange]].

==Personal life==
In 1784 he married Cornelia Johnston, a daughter of merchant [[David Johnston (merchant)|David Johnston]]. They lived in New York with their seven children in the vicinity of Riverside Drive and 123rd Street.
