Date Nails are a tangible symbol of the personal relationship and bonds of affection between giver and recipient as recognized within the larger context of the American Over-soul. The Over-soul, a dynamic confluence of lives on this continent, is described by Ralph Waldo Emerson, invoked in the poems of Walt Whitman, and found on America’s railroads and highways.

What is a hobo? We're all familiar with the ragged figure with a bundle on a stick, traveling by freight train. But a more interesting question might be, "who is a hobo, and why?"
  
Readers conversant with street or road culture will have a first-hand understanding of this phenomenon in its utmost manifestations, and all who have taken a road trip or family vacation will likewise have felt rushing around them, however passingly, the transcendental slipstream, which, here, is entered through motile action. Also, an allegorical figure, experientially and effectively similar to the Over-soul in its outward-regarding aspect, hovers over Saint-Gaudens’ 54th Massachusetts Volunteer (colored) Infantry Regiment as they march to open recognition of their place in not only the collective unconscious, but also the national consciousness.

In a groundbreaking series of special events and special exhibits this May through July, the Main Street Museum will investigate and celebrate the American wanderer with readings, movies, concerts, cookouts, lectures and more.
Gift of '''Hansum Jack,''' Tramp, immediately preceding a July 2007 performance at the msm by the musical group “Pariah Beat.” The flyer for this performance features a colorful character urging attendance at the concert and featuring numerous motifs and attributes associated with tramp, punk and other subcultures, too numerous to list here but including nautical stars similar to those embroidered on the fabulous 1848 “Sailor Pants” at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Attributes include “Doc Martens” footwear, rowdy attitude, striped railroad cap, old-fashioned tattoos, belly full of roast chicken, handgun, spliff or hand-rolled.
 
The figure gestures with his right hand; a band member, expressing uncertainty, identified the gesture as “(heavy) metal … devil’s horns,” while agreeing it could also be an unidentified or unidentifiable gesture of blessing or ecstasy originating in other, older religious and/or folkloric practices, the interpretation favored by some experts at the msm.
 
It can be no accident that this nail joined our collections at this time, so thank you, Hansum Jack, for your generous gift, and for drawing integrity and ecstasy together in perspective upon this iron point.  
 
  
Background: From the mid-19th to the late 20th centuries, railroads drove nails like these into the wooden ties to help monitor their condition. More effective anti-rot treatment of the ties, and information stamped directly onto the ties, have effectively ended the use of date nails. When dropped on a wooden or concrete surface, this nail produces a cheerful clink.

We are located in White River Junction, Vermont, a gritty and historic railroad town that is easily reached by Amtrak and is just minutes from Interstates I-89 and I-91.
  
Note: When I arrived at the Museum for the Summer 2007 Museum Fellowship, I, already holding a fairly comprehensive knowledge of the policy and social issues relating to contemporary homelessness, had it in mind to study “hobos,” knowing as I did that White River Junction, a once and future railroad hub, even now sees its share of transients, including some who ride the rails. The presence in WRJ of the New England Transportation Museum likewise focused my attention on the “hobo” phenomenon, as that museum hosts “New England Railroad Days” every fall, a festival of nostalgia and regional pride which has sometimes included spaghetti dinners, song fests, and other enjoyable events hosted by Hobo clubs.

In interviewing the town’s transients under age 30, though, I immediately learned that many strongly disfavor the term “hobo,” associating it with nostalgic magazine articles, the annual hobo festival in Britt, Iowa, the experiences of generations other than their own, and, in short, anything but actually riding the rails, today, with all its grubbiness, loneliness, despair, and occasional unexpected, unplanned joys (such as snowy, leafless spring woods which are nonetheless newly filled with birdsong; a loaf of bread and a block of cheese given, unasked, by a friendly hand; warm new friendships, a cold can of beer, and some hot rockin’ tunes all converging as the late-summer sun sinks below the far horizon; the appearance of a steady job and a place to live for the winter).

Because rail-riding was originally, and is still in its essence, a practical solution to an age-old, yet evergreen, problem (“desire to go somewhere else + no money = ?”), rather than a cultural gesture, let alone a posture of self-regard, we find the position of the younger tramps a compelling one: they are not “hobos,” they are “tramps.” The Main Street Museum therefore in this label and in all instances, including verbal exchanges on museum premises, adopts this usage, and strongly urges all museum visitors and supporters, as well as all scholars and Americans everywhere, to do likewise.

*Alex Banks is a staff attorney and assistant professor of law at Vermont Law School's South Royalton Legal Clinic, where he supervises the law students who represent low-income clients. Alex joined Vermont Law's faculty in 1995, after several years of service at Northwestern Legal Services in Farrell, Pennsylvania. While in Pennsylvania Alex represented low-income clients and also worked to support low-income housing, a community center, and a homeless shelter. He served as lead counsel in an important Pennsylvania unemployment compensation case, Meyers vs. Unemployment Compensation Board of Review, and pushed to expand the pro bono legal assistance lawyers offer to low-income clients.

David is a native of Washington, D.C., with family roots in Vermont. He likes to say that although he has not traveled widely, he has traveled deeply, and several years ago, this habit brought him to the Main Street Museum. For the last few years David has worked with the Museum on special projects including fundraising and program development, and special exhibits on Nixon masks and souvenirs from the Watergate Hotel. He has also served on our board of directors and our advisory council.

At home in Washington, D.C., David is associate editor of Street Sense, D.C.'s "street newspaper" covering poverty and homelessness. He writes about those topics and about the lives and perspectives of the homeless men and women who find a low-barrier employment opportunity selling the newspaper.

David conducted a good deal of the research and writing for the Main Street Museum's current special exhibits on tramps, hobos, and transients. Tonight he will act as both panelist and moderator, and when we are done with the introductions I'll turn things over to him.

*Tom stepped down on March 31st after nine years as Managing Director of the Upper Valley Haven here in White River Junction. The Haven operates an emergency shelter for eight families, and a food shelf and clothing room open to the entire community, and also provides educational programming to people struggling with poverty. They are now building a new facility that will provide shelter and help to men and women who are not accompanied by children.

Before coming to the Haven, Tom worked in the insurance, biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields. He is a CPA and an Army veteran and has lived in the Upper Valley since 1985. Tom is a founding Board member of the Center for Cartoon Studies, and also serves on the board of Valley Court Diversion Programs, both located in White River Junction.

*Peter is a poet, teacher and publisher who lives in West Windsor, Vermont. Locally, Peter has taught at Lebanon College, the Center for Cartoon Studies, and the Writer's Center here in White River Junction. Peter is the editor and director of Harbor Mountain Press, a Vermont-based publisher that is "interested in poetry near and far."

Peter's poems and articles have appeared in several collections of his work, and also in The American Poetry Review, The Wallace Stevens Journal, and many other journals and anthologies. His poetry has also been featured on National Public Radio.

*Michael is an associate at Kenlan, Schwiebert, Facey & Goss, a law firm in Rutland, Vermont, where he works in the litigation department handling injury and liability claims.  Michael is a native of Lyndonville, Vermont. He is an Eagle Scout and has volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Michael is a graduate of Middlebury College and Vermont Law School. He was selected as Vermont Law's first Jeffords Scholar.

The Main Street Museum offers for your education and contemplation, an exhibit of transient objects and souvenirs of trips from our permanent collection — things brought back from abroad by Vermonters. World Tours were undertaken by middle and upper class Victorians for education, health, and in a more limited sense, cultural exchange. These same goals are often associated with Hobo life and the life of gypsie encampments to the present day. Just as there is a long history of Hobo life along the state of Vermont’s railroads, this culture continues today especially in our home town of White River Jct.

Founded in 1992, the Main Street Museum has been located in four different locations in the town of Hartford.  Therefore the museum itself can be seen as a kind of gypsie. We have been in motion but are now entering into a state of rest. Well, not rest really, but at least we can say that we are more composed now than we used to be.

What is a hobo? We're all familiar with the ragged figure with a bundle on a stick, traveling by freight train. But a more interesting question might be, "who is a hobo, and why?"

  • Peter is a poet, teacher and publisher who lives in West Windsor, Vermont. Locally, Peter has taught at Lebanon College, the Center for Cartoon Studies, and the Writer's Center here in White River Junction. Peter is the editor and director of Harbor Mountain Press, a Vermont-based publisher that is "interested in poetry near and far."

Peter's poems and articles have appeared in several collections of his work, and also in The American Poetry Review, The Wallace Stevens Journal, and many other journals and anthologies. His poetry has also been featured on National Public Radio. One important starting point for Peter was his time as a student of the Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. And Peter knows the road well. His waypoints include India, New Zealand, Australia, Egypt, Cyprus, France, Ireland, and other places.

Michael Stahler

  • Michael is an associate at Kenlan, Schwiebert, Facey & Goss, a law firm in Rutland, Vermont, where he works in the litigation department handling injury and liability claims. Michael is a native of Lyndonville, Vermont. He is an Eagle Scout and has volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Michael is a graduate of Middlebury College and Vermont Law School. He was selected as Vermont Law's first Jeffords Scholar.

Michael has worked and studied in Boston and in Scotland. He knows not only Vermont, but also Vermont communities. He has a longstanding commitment to community service, and while a student at Vermont Law, he worked in the South Royalton Legal Clinic, providing legal help to low-income Vermonters and other vulnerable members of society.

A Gallery of Hobo Images

Some of the images of the Tramp we have assembled over the course of a year or so. Some are real tramps, or documentary photos. Others are images from the popular media, and so represent our changing ideas of the tramp and the nostalgia of the hobo. Enjoy.

World Tours, Hobos and Gypsies; Artifacts from Transmigratory Cultures in Focus The Main Street Museum, White River Junction, Vermont, 2007

The Main Street Museum offers for your education and contemplation, an exhibit of transient objects and souvenirs of trips from our permanent collection — things brought back from abroad by Vermonters. World Tours were undertaken by middle and upper class Victorians for education, health, and in a more limited sense, cultural exchange. These same goals are often associated with Hobo life and the life of gypsie encampments to the present day. Just as there is a long history of Hobo life along the state of Vermont’s railroads, this culture continues today especially in our home town of White River Jct.

Founded in 1992, the Main Street Museum has been located in four different locations in the town of Hartford. Therefore the museum itself can be seen as a kind of gypsie. We have been in motion but are now entering into a state of rest. Well, not rest really, but at least we can say that we are more composed now than we used to be.
