Northern Cardinal
fa;1997;na
Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). Passeriformes, Emberizidæ. Head.
Its brilliant red colors, spectacular feathered head crest, and strong voice have brought the cardinal fame. It’s the most popular of state birds, representing seven states—Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Cardinal lore is strongest in the Appalachians and Middle Atlantic states (including the Virginias and Kentucky). These regions were settled earlier than the Midwest.
