White River Junction, VT, May 29, 2008 – TRAGIC RELIEF is a Xeric Award Winning graphic novella by Center for Cartoon Studies class of 2007 graduate Colleen Frakes.

It will debut at the 2008 MoCCA Art Festical in New York, NY (June 7-8th tables C25 and C26).

TRAGIC RELIEF is the story of both the luckiest and unluckiest man in the world, his many loves, losses, and the mother that is with him throughout it all.

A panel-less comic told in poetic pantomime, TRAGIC RELIEF is a meditation on the themes of sex, love and the "unknowable other".

Frakes' work explores the complex and changing relationships we have with the unknown and natural worlds in well-crafted, wordless stories which stand alone, and yet also build upon each other to show a greater understanding of our own journeys away from our homes of origin." Jon Mathewson, PaneltoPanel.net

Frakes employs a thick, brushy line as a counterbalance to her spare, mostly silent, storytelling style. It's a striking match: her thick line gives her stories a visceral feel, while her cartoony design adds just a touch of the absurd to the proceedings." Rob Clough, http://www.sequart.org

Colleen has more finished comics after two years here than — I don't even care to guess — the rest of us combined probably, if you did the math...Thick comic filled books. She tells a damn good story in them, with drawings a lot more calculated and complicated than they look." Jeff Lok, Sundays Anthology co-editor

The book is digest size, 80 pages, b+w with a color cover, printed on all 100% post-consumer recycled papers. Retail price $7
