Four by Four on Four

A proposed collaboration by four artists to create site specific sculptural installations to be displayed in four art established sculpture exhbition spaces along route 4. The proposed locations are Sculpture Fest, Woodstock; the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, Quechee; The Main Street Museum, White River Junction;the Norman Willilams Public Library, Woodstock. The work will be on the theme of the four elements "earth, air, fire, water".

The work would be completed and installed by the time of the opening of Sculpture Fest 2006 in Woodstock on Sept. 2.

The four installations would come together in W. Rutland for the Sept. 17th opening at the Carving Studio. Following that event the work could be brought together again in another (rte. 4) location such at the AVA Gallery in Lebanon NH .

Brief descriptions by the four artists:

Dennis Grady "Fire"

Video content: Video footage of travel across rte. 4, both daytime and night, combined with satellite images obtained from the internet, intercut with archive footage of bombs and incendiary devices being dropped over foreign lands, contrasting our idyllic,pastoral environment with devastation wrought elsewhere in our name. Video screen will be embedded in a surplus military flack jacket.

Peter Blodgett "Water"

A canoe for two people to sit/lie in to view video loop exploring water sheds of Route 4 (clips of White River in Hartford, Ottaquechee at Quechee Gorge and Woodstock, and quarry pools (at Vermont Carving Studio) contrasing "river time" to our more hectic and mechanized daily time. Video screen will be incorporated into canoe merging ancient archetype with latest cultural icon.

Charlet Davenport "Earth"

A ceramic sculpture in the form of a "drip castle" familiar from childhood work/play, will house both a dvd display screen and a NASA ant farm (developed to study action of ants in outer space). The images on the dvd screen will be of humans moving, piling digging and building with earth(including art activity along rte. 4) while the ants s will be observed moving through tunnels and tracks which they naturally build.

Elizabeth R. Mayor "Air"

A clear cube will be suspended by fish line and filled with plastic toy parachute men around a video screen. The video content will be speeded up footage of children repeatedly climbing a ladder and dropping their parachute toy.

or 2. A clear cube will be suspended by fish line and clothed with limp streamers hanging to the ground. This cube will house a video screen showing footage of the cube buffeted by air (streamers streaming).
