MYethiOPIA pivots on an event that happened when Schein developed the Awassa AIDS Education Circus with a troupe of Ethiopian street kids; the performers were nearly trampled to death by an over enthusiastic audience and a “condom riot” ensued in the Awassa market.
The show probes Schein’s own conflicts bringing ‘culture’ to one of the oldest cultures in the the world, and exposes the quasi-colonial folly of making art in a ‘developing’ country – where the the cost of Schein’s shoes could pay for three month’s food for a family.
