Socks purchased at Salisbury, New Hampshire second-hand store. Salisbury New Hampshire, birthplace of Daniel Webster. In the days before central heating, and even today, some New Englanders wear socks to bed. In Washington D. C. this would almost certainly have been sweat-producing.
