He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. After his marriage he emigrated with his brothers Brinton, Edward and Timothy to the state of New York. Attracted by the reports of valuable ores, he settled near the head of the Delaware River, where he built a flour mill, the first in that region. He prosecuted his search for mines with zeal and energy, but without success. He started westward on a prospecting trip and died on the journey.
