Removed with his father's family to Sherburne-Smyma, and grew up on his father's farm there. After attending school at the old Oneida Academy at Clinton, he studied law in the office of Judge Hubbard at Hamilton, commencing in 1809, and was admitted to practice in 1813, so continuing in his chosen profession until old age. He became eminent as a counselor-at-law, and solicitor in chancery, and in the District Court of the United States. He early became pronounced in his anti-slavery sentiments, and also espoused the cause of temperance, being a life-long advocate of total abstinence. At 91 years of age he delivered an able address on the subject of temperance. He was one of the charter members of the Congregational Church of Hamilton, and for nearly 50 years was one of its Deacons and its Church Clerk. In all the ways and walks of life he was a consistent, devoted Christian. An honest man, whose integrity and uprightness were always above reproach. An inspiring life to contemplate.
